Why it is important to be mindful of Aotearoa's precious nature before you arrive

New Zealand's nature is unique. Kiwis are very committed to protecting our beautiful country from anything that could harm it, like foreign bacteria, plants and pests. Because of this, there are things you can't bring in to New Zealand.

Tell airport staff what you have

When you arrive in New Zealand, you must tell biosecurity officers at the airport about any food or medicines you're bringing in. You can do this on your Passenger Arrival Card. If you don't declare it, you're breaking the rules!

People who don't declare what they have can:

  • be a $400NZD fee at the airport.
  • be fined up to $100,000NZD in court.
  • be sent to jail.
  • be sent back home.

Tip: Your bags will go through security at all New Zealand airports. Make sure you pack your bags yourself so you know exactly what you're bringing into the country.
